Where would we be without the internet?
Really?
I for one wouldn't be here typing, for one.
There are so many things on the web that I use, e-mail, gaia, delicious, Youtube, Google, Surfy, Fanfiction.net, etc. It's true that I could probably be doing many other things (understatement) but there is so much life going on here, that I'd hate to miss out.
I watched a video that Mr. Ken gave us the link for on Youtube. Thinking back on that 55 minutes 33 seconds long clip, you can't deny that the internet is really no l0nger about distrubuting information any more, it is now more about communicating with other people. Exchanging ideas, sharing information, sending e-mails and e-cards to say hello or wish someone well, and as the man said: finding various ways to express oneself to everyone, like the Numa Numa guy and his dance.
When the man talked about how he posted a simple anthropological video about text on Youtube, one that didn't cost him much to make, it somehow made the top of the list on most seen videos due to various hotlinking sites. It was amazing. (Although I personally envy the amount of time he could take to constantly sit at home with his wife that one Sunday and refresh the sceen to see if clip would make it to number one. Sheesh.)
However, it is true that posers are all over the net as well. It shouldn't be that much of a surprise, really. People love to pretend to be something, or in most cases, someone they are not. I roleplay often on Gaia as someone I'm not, so I know. The Lonely girl and that emo guy, its amazing that people actually believed that they were real. You can't take people for face value all the time, especially on the internet where no one really feels safe giving their real name. They want attention. They want recognition. They can't get it by being who they really are, therefore they make up a false identity that sounds realistic in order to get the attention they crave. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense, but I guess people get so caught up in the moment of finding someone like them, of finding someone who they can relate to and feel a connection that they fail to see the negative possibilties and then they crash when they find it all to be a hoaxe. No one likes being made the fool, especially after they have felt such deep emotion from such a source; such hope and love and warmth. Their anger stems from that and they feel so sad and crushed, like someone has rejected them or broken up with them in a serious relationship. I guess the best advice would be not to get so into things like that.
I myself, haven't posted anything yet on Youtube, but someday I may get around to it. I doubt I'd be as successful as him, but wouldn't it be cool if I made a top list for something?!
